Read this book now

A week or two ago, I mentioned journalist Andrew Rice’s first book, The Teeth May Smile But the Heart Will Not Forget. I told you I liked it, but I had to stay mum. Waiting on the review to run and all.

Here’s the review. I’m not kidding. This debut book is stunning. And I’m a hard-ass about this stuff.

  • OK OK I will. And the review is elegant. One question: re your byline, do you really think of yourself as reporting from *East* Africa? Sierra Leone’s positively West, and Rwanda….

Good question. Well, one, I don’t write (or see first) the byline, and two, most of where I was is generally labelled East Africa. Rwanda, after all, is part of the East African community. More nuanced descriptors might be “Central Africa”–though that’s also problematic–or the “Great Lakes region” which pretty much gets it right. Except, of course, for Sierra Leone, which is inarguably not any of the above.:)

  • This looks like an amazing book, fittingly given a very well-written review. On your recommendation alone, I have added the book to the list of them I plan on reading. I hope my growning bookshelf can handle it…. 🙂
