Things you don’t want to overhear

I am too infrequently nursing a little burn I got hopping off a moto last week–it was my own fault, lacking as I do both balance and grace and forgetting momentarily to compensate with attention and will power. I’ve been careful since then, but lately I find myself taking up drivers not nearly so careful as I, weaving and whizzing about town. Today we almost got smashed by a Land Rover. Which, when I realized it wasn’t going to happen, was kind of thrilling.

But then I remember what one guy out in Nyamasheke told me:

“The moto drivers here have a saying,” a bright young man told me. “Aho gutinda mu makurosi natinda mobitaro.”

I’d rather hang out at the hospital than on the street.

;( that, too, is not right; might they offer knee pads and helmets, or is that “ala carte” ?

Supposedly Boston drivers are some of the worst in the world, but I’m still reserving that particular honor for New Yorkers.

Yes, since I’ve been on vacation in Boston this week I’ve almost been run over six times.

Yet in New York I’d probably be in a coma by now.

No, no, it’s true. Boston drivers *are* some of the worst in the world. They are worse than New York drivers. Although there is an unspoken rule in Boston that even if they are in a cross walk, you stop for pedestrians. Not so in New York. They will run your ass down if you are jay-walking, or crossing at, but against, the light. Still, somehow, that isn’t a strike against them, in my book, since technically said pedestrian is breaking the rules…
