Of beauty queens and waterfalls

This was meant to be a post a few days ago, but I accidentally put it up as a page. I blame Congo.

Two new stories to point out, just in case you feel the need to read them…

Here’s one about Rwanda’s biggest beauty pageant, which I also blogged about:

From Noses to Hips, Rwandans Redefine Beauty

And here’s one about one of the craziest jobs I’ve ever seen, guys who jump into Bujagali Falls in Uganda, holding only a jerry can:

Through the river and over the falls

Hope you enjoy.

Perhaps you made this a page because it deserves to be. The beauty pageant piece is not just beautifully written, but casually brilliant on its core themes.

I know you kids hate the F word, but the piece’s feminism – worn so lightly you don’t notice it – is also one of its strengths.

I saw the guy in Bujagali Falls! He does it for 10,000 Ugandan Shillings. We didn’t pay him, but some nuns did.

It’s wild to watch! The people I was with went rafting at Bujagali Falls conquered them all 😉
